CHVRCHES have released "Overthinker," the second single from their forthcoming album All The King's Men. The song finds Lauren Mayberry looking inward, working through family tension and emotional contradiction over the band's synth-driven sound. It follows "Roses," the comeback track that arrived alongside news of a new label, and it lands as the countdown to the record tightens.
Days before "Overthinker" surfaced, the trio played an intimate charity show in Glasgow, where they aired eight currently unreleased songs and brought out Biffy Clyro's Simon Neil as a surprise guest. That setlist is the clearest signal yet of how much new material is waiting behind the album, and it places the band back in a small room in their home city, testing the songs at close range before they go wide.
Mayberry has described the period around this project as her most personal yet, an unguarded reckoning with the struggles and triumphs that fed the writing. "Overthinker" takes that framing literally: the title names the habit, and the lyric sits with the friction inside a family rather than resolving it. Where "Roses" announced a return, this one shows what the return is for.
For a group whose identity was built on gleaming, architectural synth-pop, the interesting move here is scale. CHVRCHES have always been good at big rooms, and the Glasgow charity gig suggests they know it. Eight unreleased songs in a small venue is a working method, a way of hearing how the new material behaves before the album fixes it in place. Listen for how Mayberry's voice sits against the production on "Overthinker": the tension she is writing about is carried in the arrangement as much as the words, and that is where the record's character will show.
All The King's Men is on the way, with "Roses" and "Overthinker" already out. More on CHVRCHES as the album takes shape: ROMBO's CHVRCHES coverage.
