Cro-Mags to Release 40th-Anniversary Re-Recording of ‘Age of Quarrel’, Share “World Peace”

Forty years after it first detonated in the New York hardcore scene, Age of Quarrel will return in a newly recorded version. Cro-Mags have announced a re-recording of their 1986 debut, set for release on November 13. The first track, “World Peace,” is streaming now.

The decision to revisit the album rather than remaster or reissue it is pointed. Age of Quarrel was a collision of thrash metal’s aggression and NYHC’s raw charge, and it arrived into a scene already rife with tension. In the decades since, the band’s legacy has been tethered to legal battles and rotating memberships. Frontman/bassist Harley Flanagan, who has led the group in recent years, has been the constant through those ruptures. A full re-recording reads as an act of reclamation—an assertion of authorship over a record that shaped a genre but never stayed neatly within one set of hands.

“World Peace” offers a first glimpse of the approach. The production is cleaner, the attack undiminished. Where the original trembled with lo-fi urgency, this version presents the song’s structure with a clarity that emphasizes its crossover instincts. It’s not a replacement so much as a revision, aligning the material with the band’s present tense.

For a record that channeled urban decay, spiritual searching, and brute force, the re-recording invites a question about how hardcore holds time. Cro-Mags seem to be answering it on their own terms.
