Daniel Donato Documents a Nashville Route from Ryman to Robert’s on New Live Album

Daniel Donato’s new live album traces a path most Nashville players don’t get to retrace. Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country: Ryman to Robert’s, out now, was recorded Aug. 22, 2025, at the Ryman Auditorium, followed by a late-night jam at Robert’s Western World — the same Broadway honky-tonk where Donato spent his teenage years as a guitarist in the Don Kelley Band. A mini-documentary about the shows arrives Saturday.

The three-disc set moves from a full 20-song Ryman performance to the backroom of Robert’s, connecting the headlining slot to the stage where he once played Allman Brothers and Merle Haggard standards for tip buckets. The band, Cosmic Country, includes Nathan “Sugar Legg” Aronowitz on keys, bassist Will “Mustang” McGee, and drummer William “Bronco” Clark.

For country listeners, the set offers chugging originals like “Blame the Train” and a rootsy take on “I Saw the Light,” but the longer instrumental passages — “Fortunate Sparrow” stretches past 15 minutes, “Hangman’s Reel” past 11 — are the clearest document of Donato’s current approach. The playing is more exploratory than bar-band showy, and the recording preserves both the Ryman crowd’s energy and the smaller, sweatier reunion across the alley.

Donato is 31 now. Ryman to Robert’s doesn’t frame that history as nostalgia. It just captures the two rooms that shaped him, within a few hours of each other.
