David Lee Roth Sold His Publishing Catalog

The former Van Halen singer confirmed the sale in a recent interview, saying he feels “rich” for the first time.

David Lee Roth sold his publishing catalog eight months ago. He confirmed the deal in a video interview with the Associated Press, conducted backstage at Coachella earlier this month.

Roth made a surprise appearance at the festival’s first weekend, performing “Jump” with Teddy Swims. When asked how he feels about the sale, he laughed and said, “Rich! For the first time in my life, I can rub two coins together and create a little interest.”

He didn’t disclose the exact amount. But given the value of Van Halen’s catalog and the current market for legacy publishing rights, the figure is likely substantial. Roth joins a growing list of veteran artists who have cashed out their songwriting assets in recent years, from Bob Dylan to Paul Simon.

The sale marks a quiet end to Roth’s long financial grind. He spent decades as one of rock’s most recognizable frontmen, but publishing income from the Van Halen catalog was always split among band members. Now he owns none of it, but he owns the cash.
