Deafheaven Share “Hunter” Video as New Release Turns Toward Extremity

Deafheaven have released a video for “Hunter,” drawn from a record being framed as the band’s most extreme work. For a group built on the tension between severity and melody, that framing is the story.

Deafheaven have shared a video for “Hunter,” taken from their new release, At Work in the Fields of the Bomb. The record is being presented as the band’s most extreme work to date, a claim worth weighing for a group whose reputation rests on friction.

Since Sunbather carried them out of the Bay Area and into a decade-long argument about what black metal is allowed to be, Deafheaven’s heaviness has always arrived in a specific shape. Tremolo riffs pushed through reverb, buried under long melodic arcs that refuse to resolve on schedule. Their extremity was inseparable from their patience.

The new material is described as pushing further. What that suggests is not simply volume or speed but a removal of relief, less space between the blast and whatever comes after it. “Hunter” is the entry point being offered first, and its video puts the band’s visual instinct alongside the audio rather than behind it.

Deafheaven have never been fully claimed by the genre that shaped them, and their best work has come from that refusal. Whether the melody has been abandoned here or just moved further out of reach is the question At Work in the Fields of the Bomb will have to answer. The framing raises it either way.
