Dean De Benedictis Closes a Two-Decade ‘Salvaging’ Trilogy with Spotted Peccary Music

Dean De Benedictis has spent two decades working through a single, quietly ambitious project: documenting what can be salvaged from a life in sound. Salvaging the Future, on Spotted Peccary Music, completes the trilogy that began with Salvaging the Past in 2005 and continued with Salvaging the Present in 2016.

De Benedictis is better known to many listeners as Surface 10, a long-running presence in electronic ambient music with festival appearances and releases on DiN, Hypnotic, and Space For Music. His Spotted Peccary history also includes the Desensitized collaboration with Deborah Martin. On the new record, that familiarity gives way to a more restless collage: beatless spaces sit against beat-driven sections, and sparse acoustic instruments and vocals thread through the electronics.

The album’s title carries a specific weight. De Benedictis puts it plainly: “Moving forward with mindfulness would quite literally mean salvaging the future.” That idea runs through the closing track, “Our Story Survives Collectively,” which leans toward hope without promising it. For a trilogy about time and loss, the ending is as much an invitation as a conclusion.
