The shoegaze band announces an unexpected collaboration with the PC Music founder, rolled out through a telemarketer-themed teaser campaign.
DIIV’s next album has a name, a producer, and a release date, but no music yet—only a cryptic marketing stunt. ZIRP! is coming October 30 via Fantasy, and it finds the Brooklyn shoegaze group working with A. G. Cook, a producer whose name still connotes hyperpop gloss more than the kind of frayed guitar textures DIIV has spent over a decade refining.
The announcement arrived over the weekend without a single or a sound clip. Instead, some fans received business cards in the mail bearing a QR code and a phone number. Calling +1 229-798-9477 triggers a telemarketer-style message that pitches ZIRP! as “the future of alternative multimedia entertainment” and rattles off promises to “challenge assumptions” and “think on a global scale.” The fake corporate language pulls directly from the kind of product-as-art irony Cook helped pioneer through PC Music a decade ago.
Cook has been omnipresent in 2026, producing Charli XCX’s Music, Fashion, Film and its lead-in soundtrack to the A24 mockumentary The Moment, reissuing early Dux Content material with Danny L Harle, and pushing his own guitar-centric work with Thy Slaughter and last year’s Britpop. DIIV, meanwhile, are following 2024’s Frog in Boiling Water. The pairing raises a genuine question: whether Cook will sand down DIIV’s edges or if the band’s corrosive haze will seep into his pristine architecture. For now, the only clue is a voicemail telling you, absurdly, that you’re calling the future.
