Father John Misty released “The Payoff” this week, his second single of 2026. Written and composed by Josh Tillman, the track was co-produced with Drew Erickson, a frequent collaborator who worked on 2024’s Mahashmashana.

Where that album leaned ornate and expansive, “The Payoff” hits a sharper angle. A thick, distorted riff drives the song, layered with ELO-style string flourishes that give it a warped, psychedelic edge. The lyrics are characteristically elusive, but the chorus cuts through: “Waiting for the payoff
