Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Morris to Miss New Order’s Chile Return, Health Reasons Cited

Keyboardist Gillian Gilbert and drummer Stephen Morris are stepping back from New Order’s live lineup indefinitely, citing personal health issues, and will not perform at Primavera Chile this November.

New Order will play their first show in Chile in seven years this November at Primavera Chile, but the Manchester band will arrive without two of its most enduring members. On Monday, the group announced that keyboardist/guitarist Gillian Gilbert and drummer Stephen Morris are withdrawing from all touring “for the foreseeable future” due to personal health reasons. No further details were given.

In a brief statement posted to social media, the band acknowledged the absence while confirming the festival date. “Bernard, Phil and Tom are really sorry that Stephen and Gillian can’t join us this time, but unfortunately the circumstances make it impossible,” the message read, referring to vocalist/guitarist Bernard Sumner, guitarist/keyboardist Phil Cunningham, and bassist Tom Chapman. New Order’s management did not respond to requests for comment, and it remains unclear who will perform in place of Gilbert and Morris.

The news arrives as New Order—alongside Joy Division—prepare for their long-deferred induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on November 14 in Los Angeles. The ceremony, which will air on ABC and Disney+ in December, will now unfold against the backdrop of an interrupted live lineup. Gilbert and Morris have been central to New Order since the band’s earliest days, with Morris co-founding Joy Division in 1976 and Gilbert joining the following decade.
