Ivor Novello Nominations Highlight Persistent Gender Disparity

This year’s Ivor Novello shortlist shows male songwriters outnumber women two to one, despite a strong showing from artists like Olivia Dean and Self Esteem.

The nominees for the 2024 Ivor Novello Awards have been announced, placing a spotlight on both artistic achievement and an ongoing structural imbalance in British and Irish songwriting. The shortlist reveals that male songwriters outnumber women by a ratio of two to one.

Leading the nominations with two each are Olivia Dean, Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell, Jacob Alon, Self Esteem, and Kae Tempest. Tempest faces a unique circumstance, competing against himself in the Best Contemporary Song category for two different tracks co-written with producer Fraser T Smith.

The gender breakdown, reported by The Ivors Academy, underscores a persistent issue within the industry’s recognition frameworks. While the nominated works represent a high watermark for songwriting craft, the list reiterates a long-standing call for greater equity and representation behind the scenes in music creation.
