IXRQ Returns to Electro’s Core Tension on Form & Fashion EP

Electro has never been about inventing a new machine. It is about finding new things for an old one to say. On Form & Fashion, IXRQ approaches that task with a discipline that avoids both hollow revivalism and empty futurism.

Released a year after The Future Is Plastic, the four-track EP sits within a recognizable lineage—the cold precision of CPU, the propulsive logic of Carl Finlow’s work. But the pleasures here are specific rather than referential. The 808 patterns in “Signal Bridge” groove instead of merely functioning. “Opal Tilt” bends its fat bass and displaced synth lines until the system seems to think beyond its programming, turning familiar grammar into something playful and physical.

There is a productive ambiguity throughout. Vocoder commands land without clear authority; clipped Ensoniq fragments and reverb-soaked probes open spaces where the rhythm loses certainty. Closer “XPVC Cascer” accelerates that tension into restless motion, while opener “I Am Modeled” establishes the EP’s stoic tone.

For a genre built on recurring signals, the question is always whether those signals still carry meaning. IXRQ’s answer is not a reset but a recalibration—a reminder that electro’s future remains a matter of arrangement, not invention.
