Jack White and Chris Robinson Cover Free’s “I’m a Mover” in Chicago

Jack White doesn’t often share the stage with guests, so when it happens, the choice tends to be deliberate. On Thursday night at Chicago’s Radius, he brought out Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes for a cover of Free’s “I’m a Mover.” The track, from Free’s 1969 debut Tons of Sobs, is exactly the kind of deep cut White has been threading through his setlists on this tour.

Robinson handled lead vocals, pushing the song’s blues-rock stomp with a ragged, lived-in delivery, while White bent dirty guitar lines around him. The pairing felt less like a summit and more like two lifers picking through a shared record collection. There was no grand preamble—just a song that mattered to both of them, played loose and loud.

White’s current North American run, behind his album Frozen Charlotte, has been built partly on that archival impulse: obscure covers, forgotten B-sides, a sense that every night might open a different back page. The Chicago stop added a rare voice to that logic. The tour continues through November.
