Jhené Aiko has released ‘Westside Whimsy’, a dense 20-track collection framed explicitly as a love letter to Los Angeles. Arriving via ALLEL/Artclub/Def Jam Recordings, the album cements a specific geographic and sonic identity rather than chasing a broad commercial shift.

The project reinforces its regional focus through its guest list. Appearances from established LA figures—Kendrick Lamar, Larry June, Ab-Soul, Tyga, and OHMA—anchor the album to a distinct cityscape. This is a narrow, localized approach that contrasts with the expansive, genre-blending R&B currently populating the mainstream.

In a recent interview with Complex, Aiko clarified the album’s stylistic origins. She described the sound as “laid-back,” heavily influenced by ’90s music and West Coast surf culture. The aesthetic draws from her own history with California road trips, a context she framed simply: “It’s just such a magical place.”
