John Summit and Pete Tong Dispute Unreleased Remix of “Missing”

A disagreement over the rollout of a cover of Everything But The Girl’s “Missing” has spilled into public view, with John Summit accusing Pete Tong of sidelining his version in favor of Franky Rizardo’s.

A dispute over an unreleased take on Everything But The Girl’s “Missing” escalated this week when John Summit called out Pete Tong on social media, alleging the veteran DJ and BBC Radio 1 host had effectively taken his remix and planned to release it with Franky Rizardo instead. The accusation, posted on July 8, included screenshots of messages between the two discussing a collaborative orchestral remix.

Summit clarified that after speaking with Rizardo, he believed the producer was unaware of the full background. Rizardo later issued a statement saying he would no longer be part of the release, adding that the decision was not about taking sides. “It simply no longer feels right to me,” he wrote.

Tong responded in a video interview, showing an email his team had sent to Summit’s camp. The proposal outlined a release plan: Franky Rizardo’s mix first, with minimal orchestral elements and a replayed vocal, followed later by John Summit’s version. Tong said he was disappointed and had tried to contact Summit directly. “If you’ve got a problem, pick up the phone,” he said. “He’s chosen to not respond.”

The exchange leaves the future of any official release for the remixes unclear. The song itself, built around Everything But The Girl’s 1994 single, remains caught in a breakdown that, for now, is more about rollout control than creative disagreement.
