The new single pairs deadpan vocals with a horror-score viola, addressing the unavoidable mess of being human without offering easy comfort.
Released today, Joyeria’s “The Curse” opens with a flatly delivered confession: “There is no cure / Not for this curse / When will it end / Or will it get worse.” It’s the latest preview from the album Decay Decay Decay, out July 31 via Dead Cactus, and it wastes little time establishing a tone of grim, unflinching clarity.
“You can’t bypass the work and the mess it takes to be human,” Joy explains. “It feels more and more as though the world at large is trying to force a correlation between wealth and intelligence, or value and monetary gain — but this is all a lie.” The song doesn’t lecture; instead, it lets the unease fester. A slashing viola line, straight from a horror film’s most anxious scene, reinforces the sense of something inescapable.
