Kenny Loggins, Kevin Bacon Stage Classroom-Instrument ‘Footloose’ Ahead of Songwriters Hall Induction

On the eve of his Songwriters Hall of Fame induction, Kenny Loggins brought a toy-instrument medley—and a theatrical Footloose interruption—to The Tonight Show.

The night before he is inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Kenny Loggins turned The Tonight Show into a grade-school jam session. Joined by Jimmy Fallon and the Roots on toy guitars, xylophones and kazoos, Loggins worked through a medley of his soundtrack-era hits: “I’m Alright,” “Danger Zone,” “Celebrate Me Home,” and finally “Footloose.” Midway through, Kevin Bacon stepped in to sing the title track, only to be halted by John Lithgow, who reprised his Footloose role as Reverend Shaw Moore. “I object to this kind of music. It’s illegal in this building,” Lithgow announced, before Bacon shot back, “Jump back. Hey, I thought this was supposed to be a party. Let’s dance!”

The lighthearted set arrives at a more complicated moment for Loggins’ catalog. Last year, Donald Trump used “Danger Zone” in an apparently AI-generated video without the artist’s consent, leading Loggins to issue a sharp public statement. “This is an unauthorized use of my performance… I can’t imagine why anybody would want their music used or associated with something created with the sole purpose of dividing us,” he said at the time. The protest underlined how seriously Loggins treats his songwriting, even as “Danger Zone” marks 40 years since its Top Gun release.

Tonight’s Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City will honor Loggins alongside Taylor Swift, Alanis Morissette, Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons of Kiss, Terry Britten & Graham Lyle, and Walter Afanasieff. The classroom-instrument performance served as a reminder that Loggins’ buoyant catalog has rarely been just background music.
