A key to 20 Forthlin Road, the Liverpool house where Paul McCartney lived as a teenager, has sold at auction for a £5,000 hammer price. With fees, the buyer paid £6,100, roughly double the estimate placed on it before bidding opened.

The house is less a footnote in Beatles history than a workshop. McCartney and John Lennon did some of their early writing there, and the address is now in the care of the National Trust, preserved as a stop on Liverpool’s Beatles circuit rather than left to the property market. That a single key can fetch four figures says little about locksmithing and a great deal about what proximity to that period is now worth.

Whether the key was ever turned in that door is a question the result does not answer. Provenance does the work that atmosphere cannot, and auction houses know it. What the sale registers is a market that keeps pricing the mundane residue of the Beatles: objects with no musical content, only an address.
