Willie Nelson appears in a new campaign video for the Democratic Texas state representative, while Yo La Tengo will play a 500-capacity fundraiser in Austin.
Willie Nelson has endorsed James Talarico, the Democratic Texas state representative running for Senate, appearing in an online campaign video for him. The two were photographed together backstage at Nelson’s Fourth of July concert this year. Nelson’s message in the clip is short: “I’ve gotten to know James Talarico. He’s a good man, who will be a good senator for the state of Texas. Please vote and vote for James Talarico.”
He joins a list of supporters that already includes Don Henley and the Chicks. Nelson has been here before. He campaigned enthusiastically for Beto O’Rourke during the 2018 Senate race and the 2022 governor’s race, both of which O’Rourke lost. Senator Ted Cruz responded on X by conceding that Nelson’s music is great, then adding that historically this has been the beginning of the end for Democratic campaigns in Texas.
Yo La Tengo’s involvement takes a different shape. The band will play a benefit in Austin on October 27, capped at 500 people, with entry set at a $100 donation to the campaign. The group has a long record of this kind of work: a 2004 benefit for John Kerry’s presidential bid, and offers of private acoustic shows in 2024 in exchange for donations to the Harris/Walz ticket.
What endorsements like these supply is less persuasion than infrastructure. Money, a room, and attention in a state where Democratic Senate campaigns have consistently run short of all three. Nelson’s support is symbolic. Yo La Tengo’s is arithmetic.
