Lael Neale Announces Self-Released Album _As Killers Do_, Shares Single “Slip Away”

A year after her Sub Pop debut Altogether Stranger, Lael Neale is stepping out on her own. Her next album, As Killers Do, will arrive November 20 via her newly launched label Consensual Sound, and its lead single suggests a sparser, more urgent direction.

Built on Omnichord and guitar, “Slip Away” is a lean garage-rock track that producer Guy Blakeslee (ex-Entrance Band) helped shape. Neale recorded the whole album on a Tascam eight-track in her Echo Park kitchen, with mastering by Chris Coady. The result is a sound that feels both home-brewed and focused.

In a statement, Neale framed the song around the mortality of those who act like gods: “We act as little gods. Assuming great import. All that we build, create, collect and become, to be taken away. We are not gods. The only consolation I have in a world of megalomaniac billionaires and sociopathic leaders. They all will die. We all will die. The Earth will go on. Hell yeah.”

The accompanying video stitches together her black-and-white paintings. Neale will play a string of dates in Europe and the U.S. this month, before the album lands in November.
