The singer-songwriter returns after a deliberate break from social media with a record produced by Joe Henry and a lead single about leaving the city behind.
Margaret Glaspy returns on August 7 with I Am Both, her fourth full-length and first since she deliberately withdrew from social media to reclaim her writing practice. The album, out on ATO, arrives with the single “Michigan,” a post-breakup travelogue that began with a real trip to the Midwest.
“I was in Michigan a couple years back and had a really beautiful time,” Glaspy says. “It turned into a song about someone going through a bad breakup, and then deciding to just leave the city behind.” That retreat from the noise of daily input runs through the entire record. Glaspy explains that the break from platforms reshaped her thinking. “When I started writing for this record I had a goal of getting my practice back.
