The singer-songwriter explains why she’s stepping away from traditional touring to focus on new material.
Mitski will not mount a full tour behind her latest album. Instead, she’s playing a short series of residencies. In a video statement posted online, she laid out a simple reason: the pull toward writing is stronger than the pull toward the road, and she cannot do both at once.
“I’m not someone who can do it all,” she said. “Right now I feel a stronger pull towards writing more, and in order to do that, I have to cut back on performing.” She emphasized that this is not a permanent shift. She may book a proper tour again someday. But for now, the excitement she describes is tied to generating new songs, not recreating old ones for crowds.
The decision sets her apart from an industry logic that treats relentless touring as the default. Mitski’s relationship with live performance has often been complicated, and her choice sidesteps the burnout narrative by simply acknowledging a different creative phase. She didn’t frame it as exhaustion or crisis, just a clear statement of priority: right now, writing matters more.
