Selena Gomez Seeks Dismissal From Wondermind Investor Fraud Suit

Lawyers for the singer call the securities fraud claims “meritless if not frivolous” and say she was never involved in managing the mental health startup.

Selena Gomez has filed a motion to dismiss the fraud claims against her in the lawsuit brought by investors in Wondermind, the mental health company she co-founded in 2021 with her mother Mandy Teefey and The Newsette founder Daniella Pierson.

The investors, who say they put nearly $1.2 million into the startup, sued the three founders about two weeks ago for securities fraud, common law fraud, and breach of contract. They allege they were promised a functional app, advertising deals, and celebrity cover stories while the company quietly collapsed. On Wednesday, Gomez’s attorneys moved to remove her from the case entirely.

Mathew S. Rosengart, the singer’s lawyer, told Rolling Stone the claims are “completely meritless if not frivolous,” adding that the idea Gomez engaged in fraud is “absurd.” The filing also states Gomez’s team is considering sanctions against the plaintiffs for including her in the suit.

The motion argues the investors’ allegations are vague and contradictory, and notes that the complaint itself says Gomez did not communicate with the plaintiffs, was not involved in the securities offerings, and was not in a position to control the company. Gomez held a minority stake and a consultant role with the title Chief Impact Officer, according to the motion, while management rested with Teefey and Pierson as co-CEOs and board members.
