SiriusXM and iHeartMedia Weigh a Merger

The satellite radio giant and the largest U.S. radio broadcaster are in early discussions about combining their operations, with Irving Azoff and Apollo Global offering support.

SiriusXM and iHeartMedia are considering a merger that would reshape American audio broadcasting. Reports from Variety and Bloomberg indicate the two companies have begun preliminary talks.

iHeartMedia reaches an estimated 250 million monthly listeners across roughly 850 terrestrial stations. SiriusXM counts 33 million subscribers. Together, they would control a vast portion of radio’s remaining audience. But the move isn’t purely about expansion. Both businesses face steady pressure as streaming services and podcast networks siphon off listeners and advertising dollars.

Music executive Irving Azoff and private equity firm Apollo Global Management have offered to help structure a deal, according to Variety. Their involvement suggests the kind of financial backing that often accelerates media consolidation.

The conversations remain informal. No agreement exists, and a union of this size would almost certainly draw regulatory attention. Still, the fact they’re talking at all underscores how thoroughly the audio landscape has shifted since satellite and broadcast radio last redrew their boundaries.
