Solid State Logic follows its SSL 2 and SSL 2+ with a smaller desktop interface built for producers who record in the box and need a direct signal path.
Solid State Logic has added the SSL 1, a two-input, two-output USB audio interface that strips the desktop recording format down to a mic channel, an instrument or line channel, and a single stereo output. The unit sits alongside the existing SSL 2 and SSL 2+, aimed at producers who work mostly inside a DAW and do not need a larger patchbay to capture ideas.
The front panel keeps the signal path visible. Channel 1 is the microphone input with switchable 48V phantom power, a low-cut filter at 75 Hz, and SSL’s Legacy 4K circuit. Channel 2 handles instrument or line level, with a line switch to move away from the default instrument setting. Both channels have gain controls and five-segment LED metering. A Mix button blends the two inputs with USB playback for minimal-latency monitoring.
Conversion reaches 32-bit, 192 kHz. The SSL 1 is powered over USB-C, with a second 5V USB-C input available for use with smartphones and tablets. Balanced quarter-inch outputs and a single headphone jack keep the connections basic. The monitor knob, in typical SSL style, runs to 11.
Mechanical controls feel solid, and the compact enclosure has enough weight to stay put on a desk. The appeal of the SSL 1 is not in features added, but in what was left out.
