System of a Down Add a Third Rose Bowl Night, With Gojira Opening

System of a Down’s Rose Bowl run now stands at three nights, with Gojira confirmed as support on the newly added date.

System of a Down have added a third night to their Rose Bowl run. Gojira will open the new date. That is the news, and it is a small piece of information that says a fair amount about how this band operates now.

SOAD have toured intermittently for years, treating live appearances as occasions rather than a cycle. Turning a single Los Angeles-area stadium show into a three-night residency is a different proposition: it moves the band from an event into a sustained presence, in the city that shaped them. For Southern California audiences, it also tests how deep the demand runs when the supply is no longer scarce in the same way.

The pairing is the more interesting detail. SOAD’s rhythm section has always been the engine of the band, the part that made odd-metered, stop-start songs land physically as well as politically. Gojira arrive from another direction entirely: patient, precise, built on repetition and weight rather than rupture. Both bands work in low registers, and neither treats heaviness as decoration. Sharing a bill is a curatorial decision, not a demographic one.

It is also a meaningful room for Gojira. The French band has spent two decades building a US following largely through support slots and festival bills rather than radio. A Rose Bowl crowd is the largest stage that path has produced so far.
