The Avalanches Announce New Album No Bad Memories

The Australian group returns with an album built from the fragments of advertising and nostalgia, featuring Portraits Of Tracy on the new single.

The Avalanches have confirmed details of their next album, No Bad Memories, out October 16 on Modular. The follow-up to 2020’s We Will Always Love You arrives after a slow rollout that began with an interactive RPG built around a fictional company, Takumi Digital Archives.

The record’s concept pulls from the tension between the craft and the emptiness of late-20th-century advertising. Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi describe digging into old jingles and brand imagery—material that stuck from childhood—and reworking it into what they call “joyous pop music.” In a statement, they note: “Taking these sound sources from within the heart of this kinda corporate framework and flipping the fragments into our own kind of joyous pop music … eventually we arrived at this world of No Bad Memories.”

The new single, “Can’t Get Over Losing You,” pairs the group with Portraits Of Tracy, the Baton Rouge project of Tracy Amare. Chater says Amare’s songwriting “breaks my heart time after time,” adding that she sends new material almost weekly. The track joins three previously shared singles: “Together” (with Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza, and Prentiss), “Every Single Weekend” (with Jamie xx), and “Blue Shadows” (with Karen O).
