Travis Barker’s New Documentary Refuses to Look Away From the Crash That Changed Everything

The first trailer for Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear doesn’t isolate the 2008 plane crash as a single traumatic event. It presents the crash as the center of a longer, quieter collapse — one built on addiction, grief, and the question of what survival actually costs.

Co-directed by Justin Krook and Michael Dwyer, the documentary draws on interviews with late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, bandmates Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge, and Barker’s wife Kourtney Kardashian. But its weight comes from Barker’s own account. He traces the painkiller dependency that started long before the crash, not as a secret, but as a direct consequence of the band’s relentless touring schedule. “I was taking so many pills that I had a security guard whose only job was to watch me sleep and make sure I was breathing,” he says in the clip.

The crash killed four people: assistant Chris Baker, bodyguard Charles Still, and the flight crew. Barker survived with Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein, who died of an accidental overdose a year later. “Che and Chris were like brothers to me,” Barker says. “And then AM passing away a year later… why am I here, when everyone else isn’t?” That line sets the film’s tone — less redemption story than a reckoning with guilt that has no clear resolution.

Barker also describes the morning of the crash with an almost unbearable clarity. On a recent podcast, he recalled his toddler daughter Alabama sobbing and repeating, “The roof is gonna come off.” He ignored it then. The documentary, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival, gives such details room to breathe without forcing an easy narrative arc. It arrives on Hulu and Disney+ on August 13.
