The veteran BBC broadcaster and DJ has paused his Radio 2 and 1Xtra shows after a routine check-up revealed a need for further tests.
Trevor Nelson has announced he is taking a break from broadcasting after a routine medical check-up flagged an issue requiring follow-up tests. The DJ and broadcaster, a sustained presence in UK music for 40 years, shared the news via social media, confirming he had already been absent from his daily Radio 2 slot this week.
Nelson’s career spans roles as a producer, A&R figure, and one-time collaborator with D’Angelo, but he remains best known as a trusted guide through soul, R&B, and club music on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 1Xtra, as well as the force behind the Soul Nation party series. Earlier this year, he received the Judge’s Special Recognition Award at the Audio and Radio Industry Awards (ARIAs).
In his statement, Nelson stressed the importance of dealing “with facts and not speculate,” adding: “I’m concentrating on getting better, being back to 100% me and to getting back behind the mic and the decks.” No further details about the health issue were given.
Lorna Clarke, BBC Director of Music, offered the corporation’s support: “Everyone at BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 1Xtra wishes Trevor a very speedy recovery and we all look forward to him returning to his shows whenever he is ready.”
