Troye Sivan Releases “She’s the Best” Alongside a Video for “FF”

Troye Sivan’s new album arrives with a Gordon von Steiner-directed clip for “FF,” teased by the singer as the gayest music video of his career.

Troye Sivan has released his new album, She’s the Best, and with it a video for the song “FF.” Directed by Gordon von Steiner, the clip keeps Sivan inside and around a chic beach house, mostly in close quarters with a male co-star, and makes room for product placement from Mistr.

The video was trailed on Wednesday, when Sivan posted on X that it was the gayest of his career. In a reply to his own post, he clarified that it would not simply be gay but “GAY gay,” which sets a specific expectation for a song whose own text is quieter than that.

“‘FF’ is an undying love song to a man I don’t know yet. Or at least I don’t think I do,” Sivan said in press materials. “It’s me at my most longing, and about how lonely it is to love someone who isn’t here yet. It might sound like a vow, but it’s really a wish.”

She’s the Best follows 2023’s Something to Give Each Other and was preceded by two singles, its title track and “Party,” both given elaborate visual treatments. The first starred Nicole Kidman, the second was narrated by Ian McKellen. That run of casting suggests the album’s rollout is as much an exercise in image-making as the record itself, with each clip arriving as an event rather than a formality.

The provocation in “FF,” notably, sits in the caption rather than the frame. A beach house, a body, a swimwear logo: the video is more languid than transgressive, and the longing Sivan describes is largely carried by the song.
