Estee Nack’s AL-ANDALUS and Ill Conscious’s The Premise arrive with precision and subtlety, rewarding those who lean in.
This week two new projects from the underground pull rap in opposite yet equally compelling directions. Estee Nack teams with Cookin’ Soul for AL-ANDALUS, while Ill Conscious links with producer Finn on The Premise. Neither release announces itself loudly, but both turn out to be worth sitting with.
Nack has been on an absurd run for years, releasing so much music it is easy to lose track. On AL-ANDALUS, though, he dials back the chaos but keeps the charisma. Cookin’ Soul builds tracks from cinematic R&B snatches, referencing the lush palette of Ghostface’s Bulletproof Wallets down to the album cover homage. Nack responds with that familiar staccato sprint, his syllables ricocheting inside the beats. The restraint from both men makes the record feel focused rather than diluted. After so many experiments, Nack sounds in complete control of his chaotic style here.
Ill Conscious operates differently. The Premise is a record built on understatement. Finn’s production is ice cold, all hard surfaces and sharp edges, and Ill Conscious glides over it with a delivery so smooth you might miss the intricacy. On tracks like “Pupils Become Rivals” and “Carbon Traces,” rhyme schemes twist in ways that demand replay, but the rapper never raises his voice to advertise his skill. There’s a casual confidence to the whole project. A brief interlude midway, with the back to back pairing of “Pineapple Mimosas” and “The Allegory,” provides the only explicit celebration, but even that feels earned rather than performative.
Both albums treat craft as something to be felt before it is analyzed. They pull you in without gimmicks, and they stay with you after the volume drops. In a genre too often marked by noise, that quiet commitment to technique registers as something rare.
