Virga Share Two New Tracks, “Perception Management” and “Impassable Monolith II”

The Lawrence, Kansas trio follow this year’s EP with a pair of songs, one of them a seven-minute centerpiece, while finishing a tour leg alongside Chat Pile and Soul Glo.

Virga have been releasing music since 2022 without much noise around them. That has changed slightly this fall, with the Lawrence, Kansas trio opening the first leg of Chat Pile and Soul Glo’s North American tour, a run that ends with shows in Houston and Dallas before Shallowater take their place on the bill.

Two new songs arrive in that window: “Perception Management” and “Impassable Monolith II.” The first stretches to seven minutes, and the length is not incidental. Virga build through slow accumulation rather than sudden release, letting riffs gather mass before the vocals move to the front. The result is heavy, but not in the compressed, immediate way that word usually implies.

The band has three EPs behind it, most recently this year’s The Perfect Freedom Of Single Necessity. On Bandcamp, Virga tag themselves “prairie goth,” a label that explains little on its own but points at something real in the music: an interest in space and duration that sits beside the volume rather than underneath it.

Both tracks are out now, with Virga’s remaining dates on the Chat Pile and Soul Glo tour landing in Texas.
