Riot Fest 2026 Kept Its Edge Through Mud, Rain, and Last-Minute Cuts

Riot Fest 2026 was a weekend defined by weather as much as music. Heavy rain turned the Chicago grounds into mud like wet concrete, forced schedule changes, and led to outright cancellations across the festival circuit, including Louder than Life and Shaky Knees. At Riot Fest, artists like Afroman and Remember Sports were dropped from the revised lineup. Slick Rick’s set was undercut by poorly rendered AI visuals, a choice that flattened the energy of an otherwise legendary performer.

Still, the festival had more than enough to justify the trudge. Soul Glo opened the weekend with ferocious hardcore, air-horn cues, and a pit that never stopped moving. Iggy Pop, at 79, looked his age until he started performing. Opening with “TV Eye,” the same song Jack White used to open Riot Fest 2025, Pop tore through “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” “Lust for Life,” and “Raw Power” with a physicality that made age irrelevant. The Chats drew one of the liveliest crowds of the weekend, their no-frills punk sparking a moving pit and some playful mud fighting before the worst of the weather arrived.

Riot Fest has always leaned on chaos, and this year the chaos came from the sky. The festival’s value held because the right artists remembered why people were standing in the mud in the first place.
