Weezer’s New Single Finds the Band as Its Own C.E.O.

Weezer has shared “C.E.O.,” the latest cut from their upcoming self-titled album, alongside a video stuffed with familiar faces. Tony Hawk, Michael Peña, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and others appear in a clip the band accompanied with a mock corporate memo, awarding each participant the “Gold Star of Excellence for exemplary performance.”

Lyrically, Cuomo addresses a dilemma that has shadowed the group for years. “Cranking out another ’90s jam / Wish I could do something new / But nobody wants to hear that,” he sings, before conceding, “You can’t blame ’em really / There’s something special about your early shit.” The chorus finds him as both artist and executive — “Here comes the C.E.O. / I gotta keep this rocket in the sky” — while a spoken interlude recalls making music alone in his room with a Tascam 688. By the end, he admits he’s got to “stop thinking like a mad professor / It’s getting me nowhere.”

The song arrives as Weezer prepares to release its 20th studio album on August 21, marking their first collaboration with producers Klas Åhlund and Kenneth Blume (formerly Kenny Beats), and the first time Cuomo and drummer Pat Wilson have written together since the band’s 1994 debut. The group also recently expanded its 2027 Gathering world tour, adding dates in Japan, the UK, and Europe, with Taking Back Sunday joining overseas and the Shins and Silversun Pickups supporting on a prior North American arena leg.
