ZAYN’s Manchester Show Opens with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Homage, No 1D Throwbacks

The Bradford-born singer’s homecoming at AO Arena mixed his latest album Konnakol with older material, showcasing a voice that needs no studio help. He dedicated the night to his mother and left nostalgic reunions aside.

Zayn played Manchester’s AO Arena this week, a homecoming show that pulled a clear thread between his Bradford roots and the sound of his latest album, Konnakol. The set opened with “Nusrat,” a direct nod to the late Qawwali master Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. It is a reference point Zayn has long held, one he shares with Jeff Buckley. The album title itself borrows from a specific Qawwali vocal technique, and on stage the influence felt less like decoration and more like a structural choice.
