In a new court filing, Drake’s label calls his attempt to revive a lawsuit over Kendrick Lamar’s diss tracks “astoundingly hypocritical.”
Universal Music Group has formally responded to Drake’s appeal in his defamation case against Kendrick Lamar. In a filing submitted to a New York appeals court, the label argues that Lamar’s lyrics, which included accusations of pedophilia, represent protected opinion and that Drake’s attempt to revive the lawsuit should fail.
The legal document, obtained by Rolling Stone, labels Drake’s position as “astoundingly hypocritical.” It points to the rapper’s own history of using similar rhetorical tactics in his music. UMG’s stance reinforces a lower court’s dismissal of the case, which found the diss tracks were part of a “classic hip-hop feud” where hyperbolic insults are expected.
This filing marks a significant procedural step, with Drake’s own corporate parent effectively siding against his legal interpretation. The core dispute now rests on whether Lamar’s specific bars crossed a line from artistic exaggeration into actionable defamation. The appeal continues a conflict that has moved from streaming charts to legal briefs.
