The Sydney post-punk band returns with a sharp, questioning single, marking their first release for the label founded by King Gizzard.
Body Type’s first move of 2025 is a statement of intent. The Sydney quartet has signed to p(doom) records, the label operated by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and immediately delivers a new single that sharpens their established sound. “And What Else?” is a tightly wound piece of post-punk that turns romantic doubt into a rhythmic interrogation.
The track operates on a tense, wiry guitar line that refuses to settle. It provides a brittle backdrop for the band’s signature vocal trade-offs, which here feel more pointed and layered. The lyrics dissect a familiar insecurity, the suspicion that lingers behind a partner’s affection. When the promised big chorus arrives, it doesn’t explode so much as it intensifies, a collective push against that gnawing internal skepticism. It’s catharsis through precision, not volume.
This release follows the band’s 2023 album “Expired Candy” and a period spent on separate projects. The choice of p(doom) as a new home feels conceptually apt. The label, which also houses GUM and Babe Rainbow, has a curatorial ear for Australian guitar music that is both direct and subtly warped. Body Type fits that space, offering pop structures frayed at the edges by dissonant guitar work and lyrical unease.
“And What Else?” succeeds because it doesn’t try to reinvent the band’s formula. Instead, it refines it. The production is dry and immediate, placing the interplay between the three vocalists and the locked-in rhythm section at the forefront. It’s a reintroduction that feels less like a comeback and more like a confident step forward, aligning with a label known for its focused, artist-driven approach. For Body Type, the question in the title seems to signal there’s plenty more to come.
