The guitarist appeared at the duo’s ‘Obscure’ concert series, performing songs they had never played live before.
Johnny Marr joined the Pet Shop Boys on stage in London this week. The appearance came during the duo’s ongoing ‘Obscure Pet Shop Boys’ concert series, which focuses on deep cuts and rarities.
Marr’s collaboration with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe is a long-standing one, dating back to the late 1980s. He has contributed guitar to numerous Pet Shop Boys studio recordings since 1990, while Tennant featured on several tracks by Marr’s project Electronic.
For this show, the partnership moved to the stage for a selection of songs the duo had never performed live. The setlist included the track ‘Hit Music,’ a song Marr famously praised when he first met them in 1987, and ‘I Get Excited,’ a 1989 B-side. Their shared history provided a specific context for the night, turning a concert of curiosities into a documented chapter of a decades-long creative exchange.
