Mary Halvorson & Ambrose Akinmusire: A Long-Awaited Convergence

After two previous attempts, the guitarist and trumpeter finally capture their collaborative album, a document of intuitive dialogue set for release this June.

Some collaborations are immediate, and others are a long conversation. The partnership between guitarist Mary Halvorson and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire belongs firmly to the latter category. Their first attempt at a duo record was over a decade ago. Now, after sporadic encounters and two aborted album sessions, they have arrived at Slo Mo Neon Luminate Hoverings, a full length statement set for release in June on Nonesuch.

The project crystallized over a tight sequence in January 2025. They worked through the material at New York’s the Stone, a venue known for its artist focused curation, and entered Sear Sound studio the very next day. This direct path from live working out to recording captures a particular energy, one of discovery rather than over refinement.

Their new track Soundcheck offers a clear window into their shared language. It is not a blast of free jazz chaos but a patient, luminous exploration. Halvorson’s signature warped chordal textures and melodic fragments create a shifting landscape over which Akinmusire’s trumpet glides, by turns lyrical and abstract. The space between their phrases feels as considered as the notes themselves.

Both artists point to a foundational ease as the reason this attempt succeeded where others did not. Halvorson cites a shared aesthetic and an ease of communication that allows her to try anything. Akinmusire echoes that sentiment, suggesting a mutual understanding that transcends rigid planning. This album, then, is less a composed suite and more a document of two distinct, major voices finding a rare and intuitive balance.

In a landscape where instant collaborations are commonplace, Halvorson and Akinmusire present a different model. Their album is the result of a relationship built across years, a trust earned through intermittent dialogue. Slo Mo Neon Luminate Hoverings is the sound of that patience paying off.
