The neo-classical pianist and composer follows last year’s charting album with a lighter, coastal single, out now as she plays across the UK and Europe.
Belle Chen has put out a new single, “Breezy,” on Platoon. It lands while she is already on the road for an extensive UK and European tour, with a handful of sold-out shows behind her and only a few dates left to play this spring.
The track is a deliberate shift in tone from her 2024 album “Ravel In The Forest,” which reached No.7 on the UK Specialist Classical chart and No.15 on Australia’s ARIA Classical chart. Where that record leaned into orchestral depth, “Breezy” is built for motion. Chen layers piano, synths, and electric piano around a cello line from Australian musician William Jack. The result is open and unhurried, closer to a feeling than a statement.
“With ‘Breezy,’ I wanted to catch summery air in the hair, the type of feeling you get when driving or riding along the coast with the windows down,” Chen said. She wrote the piece during London’s dark winter months in 2024. The contrast between the season and the sound explains some of its lightness — a composition that reaches for warmth before the weather catches up.
Chen’s live and recorded work has drawn attention well beyond the classical circuit. Brian Eno described her music as “original and provocative,” and she has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Latitude Festival, and the EFG London Jazz Festival. Her compositions have also soundtracked runway shows for London Fashion Week and Shanghai Fashion Week. The current tour closes with dates in Southampton on 20 May, London on 23 May, and Dublin on 24 May.
