Vanilla Ice Defends Role at Trump Event as Five Acts Withdraw

The rapper says music isn’t political and he doesn’t vote, even as the Freedom 250 concert loses half its lineup.

Five of the nine acts originally announced for Donald Trump’s Freedom 250 concert have pulled out over the past few days. Bret Michaels, Young MC, Morris Day, Martina McBride, and the Commodores are no longer on the bill. Vanilla Ice is staying. In an interview with TMZ, the rapper framed his decision as a non-political move. “Music is made to bring people together and that’s all we’re here to do, man,” he said.

The performance is set for June 26 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as part of the Great American State Fair, an event organized by Trump appointee Keith Krach to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States. Vanilla Ice rejected any political reading of his involvement. “I don’t even vote, so I don’t even care,” he said. He added that he would play for Joe Biden, Vladimir Putin, or a crowd in Iran without hesitation. “You don’t get a chance to pick your fans. They pick us.”

His manager confirmed the booking, saying the rapper is proud to help celebrate the country’s birthday. In the TMZ chat, Vanilla Ice leaned on a carefree nostalgia, recalling “fanny packs and ripped out back seats and subwoofers” as a reminder that his era didn’t take things so seriously. The event’s framing, however, is explicitly ideological. Krach’s website states the gathering aims to “honor our history, cherish our God-given freedoms, and help build a golden age of opportunity.” Staying on the lineup, even while claiming total neutrality, lands differently when half the bill has already walked away.
