The Scottish producer’s first release of 2025 picks up where last year’s ‘Loner’ left off, threading horn lines through a groove inspired by classic UK dancefloor moments.
Barry Can’t Swim is moving into a new chapter. The Scottish producer and DJ just released ‘Return To Bhibo,’ his first track of the year. It’s a single that leans into a specific corner of UK dance music, threading horn lines and a swung groove through a structure that recalls the mid-tempo warmth of Groove Armada. The track arrives with an official visualizer.
The release follows a busy stretch for Josh Mainnie, who put out his second album ‘Loner’ in 2024. That record grappled with the accelerated pace of his career since the 2023 debut ‘When Will We Land?’ broke through. More recently, he curated an edition of the long-running ‘Late Night Tales’ compilation series, a nod that placed him in a lineage of selectors stretching back decades.
Now signed to Atlantic Records, Mainnie has been accumulating a different kind of momentum. Last summer, he headlined London’s All Points East and appeared on the cover of DIY’s Festival Guide. ‘Return To Bhibo’ does not rest on those credentials. It pushes forward without grand statements, reviving an older electronic vocabulary for a new season. The single is out now.
