The Australian songwriter returns with her first album for 4AD, a ten-track set recorded in Melbourne that pairs jangle pop with questions of love and autonomy.
Julia Jacklin has announced her new album, The Gem, due September 25 via 4AD. It’s her first release for the label after a recently confirmed signing, and it was recorded entirely in Melbourne, self-produced with Robert Muinos.
The ten-track album will be available on CD, cassette, and vinyl, with limited-edition colour variants—Turquoise, Green Opal, Ruby, and Rose Quartz—exclusive to select retailers. Pre-orders are live now.
Jacklin describes the record as an inquiry into love, identity, and the friction between connection and independence. “I want to love and be loved, but I also want to be free,” she says. “The tension between those two things has been the central question of my life.”
The first single, “Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon),” is out today, threading jangle pop guitars through her plainspoken indie-rock verses. A full tracklist has also surfaced, closing with “I Wish,” a collaboration with The Maes.
