Kevin Shields Joins Primal Scream Onstage for First Time in 18 Years

At Ireland’s Beyond The Pale festival, the former guitarist performed three songs with the band, including two from *XTRMNTR*.

During their headlining set at Ireland’s Beyond The Pale festival on Saturday, Primal Scream brought a familiar face onstage. Kevin Shields, who played with the group from 1998 to 2006, joined them for three songs: “Accelerator” and “Shoot Speed/Kill Light” from the 2000 album XTRMNTR, and “Rocks” from the 1994 record Give Out But Don’t Give Up. It was the first time Shields had performed live with Primal Scream in 18 years.

The reunion comes seven months after Shields played his first My Bloody Valentine show in seven years, also in Ireland. His guest appearance at Beyond The Pale wasn’t a full return to the band’s lineup — Primal Scream played a 12-song set before the collaboration — but it reconnected a brief, intense chapter of their history. Shields contributed to the studio album More Light in 2013, yet had not appeared onstage with them since leaving the group.

The performance felt more like a reference than a reset. Shields’s noise-dense guitar on the two XTRMNTR tracks recalled the friction that defined that era for the band, while “Rocks” served as a looser, Stones-indebted counterpoint. Short of a full-scale return, the moment quietly acknowledged a link that never fully severed.
