Jon Bon Jovi Confirms He Is “Fully Recovered” After Vocal Cord Surgery and Atrophy

After a long rehabilitation, Jon Bon Jovi says his voice is back and he is ready for Bon Jovi’s upcoming Forever tour—but the road ahead will still be missing a founding member.

Jon Bon Jovi has confirmed that he is “fully recovered” from the 2022 vocal cord surgery that left one of his cords atrophying and, as recently as last year, made him uncertain about ever touring again. The announcement clears the way for Bon Jovi’s Forever tour, which begins on 7 July.

The surgery was followed by a longer rehabilitation than he expected. “I never did anything to hurt the cords,” he told People. “I didn’t have any excesses. I’m a trained vocalist. I’ve practiced the craft. So when a doctor had to explain to me that one of the cords was literally atrophying, it was confusing.”

During the recovery, the core lineup—keyboardist David Bryan, percussionist Everett Bradley, bassist Hugh McDonald, guitarist John Shanks, drummer Tico Torres, and guitarist Phil X—refused to consider other projects or retirement. “They never doubted [me] and never looked for work or decided to retire,” Bon Jovi said. “The sacrifices that each one of them have made to be there for me is on a whole ’nother level.”

One founding figure will not be there. Guitarist Richie Sambora, who left the band abruptly in 2013, remains absent from the tour, though he recently sang “Livin’ On a Prayer” at his daughter’s wedding. The tour moves forward without him, a reminder that even a hard-won recovery doesn’t restore every original piece.

Bon Jovi frames the comeback not as a pursuit of perfection but as a kind of sustained connection. “It’s like I have the gift to be able to hold this light,” he said. “The gift that I receive is being in the reflection of that light when it hits the audience.” After the physical uncertainty of the last two years, that light is back on.
