Dan Deacon details the score for Netflix’s upcoming comedy, releasing “Brothers” with Eric André on upright bass ahead of the June 26 soundtrack.
Dan Deacon has spent years in soundtrack mode, most recently scoring HBO’s Task with Mark Ruffalo. His latest project shifts toward the absurd: the Netflix comedy Little Brother, starring John Cena, Michelle Monaghan, and Eric André. The soundtrack is out June 26, and today Deacon shares “Brothers,” which features André on upright bass.
The track starts as a funky, loose-limbed loop before swelling into a densely orchestrated passage. It’s restless in the way Deacon’s best work can be—an almost Sims-like brightness that doesn’t feel like an insult. André’s bass playing brings a raw, live-wire energy that sidesteps novelty. His voice is also sampled and woven into the main theme.
Deacon described the score’s wide emotional range: it had to move “from comedic beats to surreal chaos and tear-jerking tenderness,” threading Cena’s Kafkaesque predicament with André’s spontaneous chaos. The tracks—titles like “The Extended Pee-Pee Scene” and “Porsche Scratch” suggest the tone—blend live strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and electronics.
