DOMi & JD BECK Announce Sophomore Album ‘WHO ASKED?’, Out July 31

Four years after their Grammy-nominated debut, the keyboard-and-drums duo return with an orchestral, vocal-driven project that sidesteps the star-power cameos of NOT TiGHT.

DOMi & JD BECK will release their second album, WHO ASKED?, on July 31 via Anderson .Paak’s APESHIT imprint in partnership with Blue Note Records. The announcement arrives four years after their debut, NOT TiGHT, earned two Grammy nominations and launched the young keyboard-and-drums tandem from niche internet phenomenon to late-night stages.

Where that first record leaned on a cast of high-profile guests — Thundercat, Mac DeMarco, .Paak himself — the new project takes a less obvious route. A chamber-sized classical ensemble replaces the marquee names, pushing the sound into orchestral territory that is simultaneously more stripped-down and more elaborate. Both DOMi Louna and JD Beck sing throughout, bending the material toward warped chamber pop: odd time signatures, jazz-fusion dexterity, and a dense indie-tronica sheen.

“We’re just trying to make the music we hear,” the pair said during the NOT TiGHT cycle, a philosophy that still guides their restlessness. They’ve road-tested instrumental versions of several new songs at the Toronto Jazz Festival, with sets at the Ottawa Jazz Festival (June 25) and Montreal Jazz Festival (July 2) set to offer further glimpses. A series of cryptic cinematic vignettes has outlined the album’s visual language without giving much away.

WHO ASKED? is available for preorder on vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital formats.
