Soft Blizzards Details New Tape ‘Nasses Raster,’ Shares “Froschprotokoll”

Ulf Schütte has built a body of work that moves between pulsing psych-rock, drone, and modular synthesis through projects like Phantom Horse and Datashock. With Soft Blizzards, the German composer narrows that range into what the label calls chilled-out, elevated synthetics — bright, pixelated, and less concerned with weight than with texture.

On October 2, Not Not Fun will release ‘Nasses Raster,’ a six-track tape that sits between electronic and environmental, tone and float, hypnotic yet harmonically ambiguous. The newly shared “Froschprotokoll” is one of the record’s clearest statements. Digital blips and woozy percussive patterns move alongside field recordings, producing something uncanny but not alienating: everyday sounds redrawn in crude, precise shapes, closer to MS Paint than to immersion.

The track keeps a focused playfulness that separates it from Schütte’s longer drone work. There is repetition, but it does not drift; the rhythm stays active, almost cheerful, while the harmony hovers without resolving. That balance gives “Froschprotokoll” an exploratory feel, suggesting a release built for active listening rather than background wash.
