Following public criticism over street closures for the July 4th wedding, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Swift had already covered the permit and event response costs.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed Friday that Taylor Swift paid the city over $160,000 to obtain a permit for her Madison Square Garden wedding to Travis Kelce, an event that had drawn scrutiny for its timing over the Fourth of July weekend.
“Taylor Swift has paid already the cost of the permit that was lodged, which was over $160,000 for that event and for the response to that event,” Mamdani said at a consumer protection press conference, responding to a reporter’s question about police overtime reimbursement. He added that the permit was finalized in the days leading up to the wedding.
The nuptials, held less than a week earlier, shut down several streets around the Midtown venue on a major U.S. holiday. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis had publicly urged the couple to cover NYPD costs for the 130 officers assigned daily. The mayor’s statement confirms Swift did so through the permit payment.
Days before the wedding, Swift and Kelce also donated $26 million across 20 U.S. charities. While no official total for the celebration has been released, a luxury event planner estimated the cost between $20 and $25 million, with details still scarce.
