The Iron Maiden frontman stepped onto a San Diego stage without warning, leading Armstrong’s casual cover band through a David Bowie-penned classic at the Z2/Fandom party.
Without warning, Bruce Dickinson walked onstage at FLOAT inside San Diego’s Hard Rock Hotel on July 23, joining Billie Joe Armstrong’s cover band the Coverups for a spirited take on Mott the Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes.” The unannounced appearance came during the annual Fandom/Z2 party that kicks off Comic-Con weekend, a gathering that increasingly blurs the line between rock history and comic book fantasy.
The Coverups, formed by Armstrong in 2018, play a handful of loose, no-promises shows each year, drawing from punk, power pop, new wave and classic rock. Last night’s set moved from Cheap Trick and Buzzcocks to Nirvana, Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne and Poison before Dickinson stepped in to reclaim a song he’d cut for his 1990 solo debut Tattooed Millionaire
