Mach Devices MD-7 Uses Motorized Haptics to Rethink Synth Control

The open-source mini-synth offers tactile feedback through rotating discs, challenging the screen-centric interface model at a $299 price point.

Mach Devices, a small Hong Kong-based outfit, has revealed the MD-7, a portable synthesizer that aims to pull users away from screens and into physical interaction. Its most distinctive feature is a pair of motorized discs—vaguely reminiscent of Teenage Engineering’s TP-7 recorder—that provide haptic feedback. The discs not only sense rotation for menu navigation and parameter tweaking but “talk back” to the user through adjustable resistance, simulated detents for stepped values, and virtual walls at parameter limits.

The synth engine, shown briefly on a compact 1.65-inch IPS screen, follows a basic subtractive architecture with four oscillator waveforms, a resonant multimode filter, and an ADSR envelope. A drum looper and 16-step sequencer also appear, with the discs used for DJ-style playback scrubbing. Mach Devices says the UI is still in development, but the real promise lies elsewhere: the entire firmware, including the DSP engine, modulation, and sequencer, will be open-source and published on GitHub. That invites users to rewrite the instrument’s behavior, build custom features, or create entirely new sound engines.

Connectivity includes dual USB-C ports (power and MIDI/audio), a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and a microSD slot. Priced at $299/£230, the MD-7 sold out its pre-order run quickly after going viral on Instagram. Availability is expected in September 2026. At a moment when many gear makers prioritize touchscreens, Mach Devices is betting that motorized tactility and open-source flexibility can find a dedicated audience.
